Massimo Guerrera is interested in what comes of his encounters with others in various contexts, whether that is in the entrepreneurial world (Polyco), in the context of one's home (Porus), or in the exhibition space (Darboral). For his recent series La réunion des pratiques, which began in 2007, he reflects on what occurs during the different steps involved in setting up an exhibition. In the exhibition Un moment donné (entre la galerie et la maison), Guerrera explores the trajectory of the work, from its creation to its distribution. In an unprecedented way, he invites the public to make appointments for encounters in his studio/home, or behind the scenes at the Gallery. The artist is available on Tuesdays, at 12pm, 1:30pm, and 3pm at the Gallery, as well as on Thursdays, at 12pm, 1:30 pm, and 3pm at the artist's studio.  To make an appointment with the artist, please call us at (514)875-2323. Maximum of 3 participants per appointment.

Translation of text by Christiane Baillargeon

"For several years now and throughout numerous projects, Massimo Guerrera has been exploring the permeability between oneself and others, as well as the relationship that humans have with time, his meditations creating a rhythm which dictates the work. Conducting an introspection on the concept of the artist creating in isolation in his studio, he comes to question the delicate balance that artists maintain between the act of making, immaterial matter, and the materiality of the artworks.

Relational, contextual, in situ, altering… some of the many characteristics which can be attributed to Guerrera’s artworks, but cannot fully describe his process. Although the space chosen to present his artworks is within a gallery environment, Guerrera’s exhibitions resemble mises en espace- or a staging- of visual objects. Developed versions of the installations bring together a great diversity of elements- from human beings performing actions, to texts, materials, and objects, sometimes found, modified, created, using various techniques (including painting, drawing, digital prints, modeling, etc.). Often these objects are created single handedly by Guerrera, but can also result from a collaboration between him and a viewer who agreed to participate.

These mises en espaces are part of a systemic approach, even holistic, whose process is a copy and paste from complex corporate structures. The artist encourages the viewer to focus their attention outside his/her area of expertise, in order to include themselves, too, in the creative process. For Guerrera, interactivity is a fundamental organizational principle activating the purpose of the relationship between one another.

In the exhibition presented here, Guerrera and the participating viewers schedule a session in the goal of sharing a moment together. During the process of the actual encounter, the participants remain attentive to one another, and a real exchange occurs between two people. Actions which they take together result in objects, traces, which can now be added to the environment, causing an evolution of the scene. These modifications lead to a new state, a new portrait of the given time and moment.

The space-time signified by the part of the title Entre la galerie et la maison ("between the gallery and the house"), which can also be understood as "between the gallery and the studio", refers to a path or a route. The interstice between the confines of the public and professional space, the gallery, and the intimate confines of one’s house, are the limits from which Guerrera breaks free."
