POILS (HAIRS) is a humorous tribute to the incredible hairy legacy left by the rock stars of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

Amongst others, let’s remember the surprising hairy presence of John Bon Jovi at the time of Bad Medicine. Motley Crüe, Poison, Johnny Hallyday, Motörhead are also stunning examples of hair style, and keep on surprising us, again and again. The male rock stars of those years are iconic figures who are witnesses of an era where mustaches, hairy torsos and long hair represented masculinity. They are also associated to dirt and to a provocative, often shocking attitude, and they enjoy showing the world their “bad taste”.
On the other hand, the feminine rock stars of the ‘80s and ‘90s have also used hair in a very original, if not, architectural way. Just think about Martine St-Clair, Tina Turner, Jano Bergeron, Joe Bocan, who have all used hairspray in abundance, in order to define their identity. For women, hair seems to be a “noble” medium, as compared to men, and we feel that the feminine rock stars of those days aimed for elegance and originality.

So the rock style of those golden years seems to have grown amongst an unbelievable cult for hair in all its forms. Those stylish hairy episodes keep on leaving us flabbergasted. What can we make of it, some 20 years later? That is the question I’ve asked the many artists that agreed to participate enthusiastically and eagerly.
