Text by the artist: « The new work I am presenting for this exhibition, the One Hundred Crowned Masterpieces of Painting collage book, began as a receptacle for my uncensored thoughts. A private place of immediate and intuitive reactions to an apparently impenetrable and authoritative hard-covered book with doublure binding and gilt edges about “One Hundred Crowned and Laurelled Masterpieces of Modern Painting”. »

« The new work I am presenting for this exhibition, the One Hundred Crowned Masterpieces of Painting collage book, began as a receptacle for my uncensored thoughts. A private place of immediate and intuitive reactions to an apparently impenetrable and authoritative hard-covered book with doublure binding and gilt edges about “One Hundred Crowned and Laurelled Masterpieces of Modern Painting”. »

« The sources for my interventions in the book are pages cut out of books and magazines and photographs from other projects I have worked on. In this sense, all my concerns weave their way in and out of the book. The abundance of images come from various periods in time; in one case, a page from a 1960s technical guide to lighting is inserted into a 19th century photogravure of a French painting of a soldier. In another case, the illustrated text describing a 19th century painting is almost completely taken over by a page from a 1980s guide to drapery.

Once scanned and enlarged, the book pages enter a more public realm. The narratives that are created between the juxtaposition of images become bolder, and small details are easier to read. Tucked away in a small intimate room, separate from the main room in which the prints are presented, lies the original collage book presented in a vitrine. »
